Get up the hill while the sandstone is still cool, then drop into the walled city for the gem lanes, the flower market and a rooftop with the Hawa Mahal lit below. These three carry more travellers than anything else in the city.
Amber Fort, and how much of it you actually see
The ceremonial route runs Sun Gate, Diwan-i-Am, the mirror hall, then the zenana courtyards. Ticket-only visits get you the courtyards; the guided runs add the Sheesh Mahal and the stepwell on the road below.
The old quarter, on foot or on three wheels
Johari Bazaar for stones, Bapu for slippers, and the flower market behind the Hawa Mahal at first light. The lanes are gridded and walkable; the traffic is why most people take a tuk-tuk anyway.
Kachori, laal maas and the sweet counters on Chandpole
Pyaaz kachori straight out of the oil, dal baati churma eaten with the fingers, and a run of the mithai shops that stay open long past the last light.
Agra is one morning that people plan a whole trip around.
The mausoleum takes ninety minutes; the rest of the city takes a day. The fort Shah Jahan was held in with the Taj in view, the Baby Taj that rehearsed the inlay work, and the garden across the river where the light lands last. Most travellers come from Jaipur and are back the same night.

Rajasthan keeps its tigers four hours south of Jaipur, and its leopards at the ring road.
Ranthambore is a ruined hill fort with tigers living inside it, and the zone you draw decides your morning. Closer in, Jhalana sits on the southern edge of Jaipur and holds leopards you can look for on a drive before breakfast. Sariska and the wetland at Bharatpur fill in either side.

Forts and palaces stand all over India. A staircase cut thirteen storeys into the ground, a leopard reserve inside a state capital, and a village printing cloth from carved teak for three hundred years do not.
The Stepwells at Abhaneri and Amber
Chand Baori at Abhaneri drops three and a half thousand steps into the ground in a double staircase that folds back on itself, dug so a village could still reach water in a drought year. Panna Meena, below Amber, is smaller, perfectly symmetrical and usually empty. Both sit on the Jaipur–Agra road, which is why more travellers see them from a transfer than from a tour.

The Jhalana Reserve
Twenty square kilometres of dry scrub on the southern edge of Jaipur, with a resident leopard population and a jeep gate ten minutes from the hotels. Drives run at first light and again in the last two hours before the gate shuts. Nothing is promised, but the density here is unusually high for a reserve you can reach by rickshaw.

Hand Block Printing
The villages west of the city have printed cloth with carved teak blocks and fermented indigo since the Mughals. A workshop puts a block in your hand, and the first thing you learn is that the tiny registration marks in the corner are the entire craft. You leave with the cloth you printed and a much lower opinion of machine paisley.
